About Charities & Non Profits

What is the difference between a Charity and a Non-Profit?

Charities are Non-Profit organizations, but not all Non-Profits are Charities. Non-profit corporations do not collect profits to benefit any individual. The purpose of the organization determines its classification—Charities are organized to collect money to benefit the general public. If a Non-Profit earns less than a third of its income from public solicitation, the Internal Revenue Service does not classify it as a Charity.

Do Charities have to register with the government?

Yes, in order to benefit from tax-exempt status, Charities must register and file with the state and comply with the federal tax guidelines of the Internal Revenue Service. There are multiple ways to organize and register a Charity depending on the state and the Charity's purpose.

Are donations to a Charity tax-deductible?

In certain cases, Charity donations may be tax-deductible. Some Charities allow donors to make tax-deductible contributions to the organization. However, only Charities that are organized as 501(c)(3) groups allow donors to make tax-deductible contributions.
