About Museums

Who owns Museums?

Many Museums are owned and operated by private non-profit organizations established specifically for the purpose of running the Museum. Some cities and other local governments own Museums. Universities and colleges frequently own and operate Museums, which are often related to some area of research important to the institution. Museums may also be owned by businesses, foundations, and other private entities.

How are Museums funded?

Museums rely on four main categories of funding: government grants, private donations, earned revenue, and investment income. Earned revenue comes from programs, retail sales, and rentals. A relatively small portion comes from admission fees, as some Museums are free and many try to keep admission fees low to make Museum collections accessible to the public.

How many Museums are there in the U.S.?

Including Museums of all specialty and discipline types, there are estimated to be more than 35,000 Museums in the United States.
