Goodwill refers to an agency of Goodwill Industries International, Inc., a charitable non-profit organization whose mission is to help individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employment to reach their full potential and increase their self-sufficiency. Founded in 1902, the organization began its work by collecting donated clothing and household goods and then training and hiring the poor to prepare the items for resale. Goodwill agencies are organized as independent community-based organizations throughout the U.S., Canada, and thirteen other countries.
People with disabilities are given job readiness and job skills training through an Adult Day Training Program. The program often operates in a manufacturing setting providing a controlled work environment where participants are able to develop skills at their own pace. The Day Training Program teaches participants work responsibility and reliability, co-worker relations, how to follow directions, and simultaneously builds confidence and a work ethic. Participants in the Day Training Program may progress to Community Employment.
Goodwill's Community Employment Specialists develop relationships with employers in the local economy to connect Goodwill clients with suitable jobs. Jobs for these individuals tend to be administrative or clerical, in shipping and receiving, grounds keeping, or in grocery stores and other retail establishments. The Specialist assists in finding suitable positions, connecting individuals to available opportunities, and working with individuals to develop job skills, including reliability, communication, and teamwork. Similar programs offer internships with employers.
Some Goodwill agencies provide case management services that assist individuals in identifying and applying for financial assistance and other services from government or social service providers. Others offer classes for completing GED requirements and English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. Goodwill agencies may also offer financial coaching, assistance in setting up bank accounts, and tax preparation assistance services.
Goodwill operates more than 3,200 retail stores where donated items are sold, and the agency also sells on the internet. Donated items generally consist of clothing, shoes, and household items that can be resold.
