About Anne Arundel County EPA Offices

The Anne Arundel County EPA Office is a branch office of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a federal agency whose mission is to protect human health and the environment in Anne Arundel County, MD. The EPA develops and enforces environmental regulations, awards grants for environmental projects, disseminates environmental information, and conducts scientific research and environmental studies. Anne Arundel County Environmental Protection

The regulations developed and enforced by the Anne Arundel County EPA Office are based on environmental laws adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed by the President. Regulations provide the detailed technical and operational information for compliance with environmental laws. The procedure for creating a regulation involves publishing the proposed regulation in the Federal Register and providing an opportunity for the public and stakeholders to submit comments. When finalizing the regulation, the EPA considers any comments received from the Anne Arundel County public and other stakeholders during the public comment period. Once finalized, the regulation is codified in the Code of Federal Regulations. The EPA has developed regulations for major environmental legislation including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the Toxic Substances Control Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.

EPA Inspections & Violations

After a regulation is codified, the Anne Arundel County EPA Office monitors compliance through on-site monitoring, inspections, reporting requirements, and investigations. When an instance of non-compliance is identified, the EPA has multiple options for enforcement action depending on the type and severity of the violation. The EPA may pursue civil administrative actions or civil lawsuits in Anne Arundel County Courts, and in some cases, the EPA may negotiate with a violator to voluntarily take corrective action regarding a violation. The EPA can also seek the criminal prosecution of a violator.

Anne Arundel County EPA Grants

The EPA awards approximately $4 billion annually nationwide in grants, including grants for Anne Arundel County non-profit organizations, Anne Arundel County and local governments, Maryland State, and educational institutions. Multipurpose Grants to States and Tribes provide flexible funding for recipients to implement high priority programs and activities. The Brownfields Grant is designed to facilitate the redevelopment of contaminated sites in Anne Arundel County by providing funding for assessment and cleanup costs. Other EPA grant programs include Environmental Justice, Great Lakes funding, and the Pollution Prevention Grant program.

Environmental Research

The EPA conducts environmental research to provide a scientific basis for regulation development and other decision making. EPA's six research and development programs are carried out at laboratories and research facilities in fourteen locations across the United States.
