An IRS Office is a Taxpayer Assistance Center of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The IRS, a bureau within the U.S. Department of the Treasury, serves as the nation's tax collection agency and is responsible for administering the U.S. tax code. The IRS assists taxpayers in understanding and complying with tax law, as well as enforcing compliance with tax law.
The IRS provides a variety of taxpayer self-service options online and via telephone to meet a wide range of taxpayer assistance needs. Online forms, electronic tax filing, toll-free telephone numbers, refund tracking, and the Interactive Tax Assistant are among the services that taxpayers can access online or by telephone. For issues that taxpayers prefer to resolve in person, the IRS offers Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs). There are more than 300 TACs located throughout the country.
In addition to providing basic tax law assistance and accepting tax payments, TACs can resolve matters that require a more individualized service. The IRS has identified a number of specific issues that can be best resolved at a Taxpayer Assistance Center. TACs can help taxpayer to understand notices or letters from the IRS, set up a payment plan, and identify their next steps. TACs can provide assistance with Affordable Care Act tax provision questions for individuals. Taxpayers who have registered a heavy highway motor vehicle can receive help preparing their Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return at a TAC.
TACs also provide services for non-U.S. citizens. Taxpayers who are not eligible for a Social Security number, but who need to file tax returns, can apply for an Individual Identification Number when they submit their tax return at a TAC. TACs also issue alien clearances for aliens leaving the U.S. who need a certificate of tax compliance.
Most TACs offer Facilitated Self Assistance, a self-assistance computer kiosk with an IRS employee available to assist you with navigating the IRS website. Walk-ins can receive assistance at TACs for most routine matters. However, an appointment is necessary for any matters that require more involved assistance.
