Are airport workers government employees? The people working at an airport are generally a mix of private sector and government employees. Many are employed by the airlines and other businesses that provide services at an airport. Both the federal Transportation Security Administration and state or local law enforcement agencies employ security personnel at airports. Workers who manage and maintain airport facilities may be employees of an airport authority or a private sector business.
How are public use airports funded? For the most part, airport operations are funded through user fees and surcharges paid by customers and businesses that utilize airport services. In addition, about 3,330 public use airports are eligible for FAA Airport Improvement Program grants, which provide funds for capital improvements.
