A water department is a utility which provides water and sometimes sewage services in a given community. This department may also be responsible for managing and operating wastewater treatment facilities, as well as maintaining and repairing water delivery lines and other infrastructure.
This department may be an independent agency of local or state government, or it may be combined within another, larger government department such as a department of public works. In either case, a water department is responsible for providing the community with safe, reliable water for drinking, cooking, washing and other purposes. Some departments add chlorine or other chemicals to the water supply to reduce the growth of organisms or render it safer to use.
