How long does the Social Security retirement benefits application process take?

Once a complete application is submitted, the application is processed and benefit can begin to be paid in approximately six weeks. However, inaccurate or incomplete applications can extend the processing time significantly. During periods of heavy volume of applications, the process can take longer.

How is Social Security funded?

Social Security programs are funded through payroll taxes. The payroll taxes are shared by the employee and the employer with both paying one half of the tax. Self-employed workers pay the full payroll tax because they are considered to be both employee and employer.
