What is the Post Office?

The post office is responsible for providing mail service. The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is an independent agency with retail locations throughout the country offering mail and package pickup and delivery. Post offices provide bulk mail services, domestic mail delivery, international shipping, change of address, mail forwarding, PO boxes and passport services.

Post Offices are responsible for

  1. Keeping themselves afloat. The USPS doesn't receive any funding from the government to keep its doors open. Sales of postage and other products and services must cover any expenses incurred.
  2. Delivering mail to every town in the country. Postal carriers deliver mail to approximately 155 million addresses across all 50 states. Everyone in the United States has access to the products and services offered by the USPS.
  3. Having the largest retail network in the U.S. Having access to a post office is crucial for many Americans. Fortunately, the number of retail locations operated by the USPS far outnumbers the locations offered by any other retail outlet.
  4. Price stability. No matter where you live in the U.S. the price of a first-class postage stamp is the same.
  5. Embracing technology. As technology and consumer expectations have evolved, so has the USPS. Over the past few years, the organization has made several changes to the way people can utilize its services to keep up with its competitors. For example, customers can now print labels at home and have home-pickup.

Are there different types of Post Offices?

While every location of the USPS is part of the same entity, the locations vary in size and scope. There are many small towns throughout the country that have small post offices. They often have only one employee there to service customers and offer only basic mail supplies and services. Bigger communities have larger post offices which offer a larger variety of services.
