A recorder of deeds is responsible for keeping records of real estate transactions. The primary function of this office is to record property ownership, including land ownership deeds, quit claim deeds, and copies of home mortgages. Often, searches of public records regarding property are directed to the recorder of deeds.
The recorder of deeds maintains accurate listings of all properties bought and sold in a given county. Along with real estate deeds and titles, this office usually also maintains other information about real estate transactions, including GIS maps, plat maps, and details about the addresses and descriptions of homes which have been bought and sold. The recorder also keeps records about property liens and mortgages.
