What is the DMV?

A department of motor vehicles (DMV) provides vehicle registration and driver's license services. Vehicle registrations include issuing official ownership documents, receiving payments regarding vehicle tags or license plates, and providing new license plates and updated tag stickers. Motor vehicle departments also manage the transfer of ownership of vehicles and official sales records.

Driver's licensing refers to the process of granting learner's permits, standard driver's licenses, motorcycle operator licenses, limousine licenses and commercial driver's licenses (CDLs). The DMV also administers written driving exams and road tests. These tests ensure that all license holders have the basic knowledge and skills necessary to operate motor vehicles safely.
