Food stamp offices provide money for grocery assistance to needy individuals and families through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). To considered for eligibility, you must submit an application to the food stamp office, either online or in person, and then complete an in-person interview with a caseworker.
If you're found eligible for benefits, the food stamp office will give you an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card loaded with a certain amount of value per each benefits period. You can then spend this value to buy food.
According to food stamp office rules, you may only use an EBT card to purchase food at grocery stores and certain participating restaurants. You can't use it to purchase alcohol, tobacco, or vitamin supplements. The food stamp office is responsible for disbursing the correct benefit amount and ensuring that EBT cards aren't subject to fraud or abuse.
