Aviation departments are government agencies dedicated to providing safe, efficient, environmentally-friendly and financially competitive access to transportation by air. Local aviation departments work with economic development agencies and the FAA to enforce regulations for incoming and outgoing commercial and private flights at local, regional and national airports.
The size of a local aviation department depends on the size of the municipality. Large cities with major international airports have larger aviation departments and therefore more employees and greater resources than smaller cities with smaller airports. No matter the size of the aviation department, its staff works with local and national weather services to ensure safe takeoffs and landings. Aviation departments interact with passengers, pilots and airport workers. Some departments also work with local flight schools and with military commands. All departments coordinate with local fire departments and police stations to be ready in the event of emergencies and disasters.
