Most states do not require the accreditation of Private Schools. Some states give Private Schools the option of either being accredited or receiving some type of approval or license from the state. Charter Schools are privately run but publicly funded. A Charter School has a charter or agreement with the state or sponsoring school board that allows it to operate with some degree of autonomy. However, there are some Private Schools that operate as for-profit businesses. The for-profit structure of a Private School affords owners greater control over the school than would be the case with a non-profit.
