About Animal Shelters

Where are the animals at an Animal Shelter from?

Some animals are brought to shelters by owners who cannot care for them. Others are rescued from abuse or neglect. Stray or lost animals may be brought to shelters by the general public or animal control agencies.

Do Animal Shelters euthanize unwanted or hard-to-adopt animals?

Some shelters have a firm no-kill policy and will strive to find homes for every animal they receive. Due to limited space and resources, other shelters may have to euthanize certain animals that are less suitable for adoption because of health or behavioral issues. Animal control agencies may euthanize animals that have not been adopted within a certain timeframe or animals that have shown aggression.

Can anyone adopt a pet from an Animal Shelter?

Generally, any member of the public may adopt a pet from an Animal Shelter. Some Animal Shelters will first screen or interview an individual in order to assess their suitability as a pet owner.
