How are Landfills funded?

Landfills typically charge tip fees from haulers that transport waste to the Landfill. The tip fee is a per ton fee. Tip fees are usually negotiated as a part of multi-year contracts for large customers, while a fluctuating spot-market rate is charged to other customers.

What happens to a Landfill after it is closed?

The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act sets the requirements for closing and capping Landfills that have reached their permitted capacity. Regulations also require that Landfills be maintained and monitored for thirty years following closure. Many closed Landfills eventually become parks, soccer fields, or passive recreation sites.

How many Landfills are there in the U.S.?

There are over 3,000 active landfills and approximately 10,000 landfills that have been permanently closed in the U.S. Many states have stopped permitting new Landfills and disposal options are becoming more limited as existing Landfills reach capacity.
