A WIC office is a government agency responsible for food aid. WIC, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, is a federal assistance program for low-income pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants up to the first birthday and children up to the fifth birthday. The program provides nutritious food, baby formula, nutritional education, breastfeeding education and support, and access to low-cost health services for those in need.
WIC offices disburse benefits similar to the SNAP program, through an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card that works like a debit card. However, the user of the card may only purchase specific food items approved by WIC. WIC also ensures that the child is screened for immunizations, and can help the mother make appointments for the procedure as well as keep records on file.
