A finance department provides information about financial services, banking and other financial institutions, taxation, real estate, insurance, capital markets, credit unions, charitable foundations and trust companies. It also operates the city treasury, collects city revenues, maintains public records about property and mortgages, collects parking ticket fines, administers government pensions and deferred compensation plans, and conducts fraud investigations.
Finance departments may also prepare government agencies' economic, budgetary and taxation policies, as well as oversee property management, control government business enterprises, supervise annual revenue collection from government units, and offer general insurance services to other governmental agencies. It also administers benefits and entitlements to government employees, transfers federal funds to state programs, and accounts for federal and public sector debts.
