What is a Sheriff?

A sheriff is a law enforcement officer who is responsible for maintaining public security, usually in a county. This office also operates and manages the local jail or detention center, which houses individuals arrested for crimes. County jails typically contain people awaiting trial or other legal proceedings, or who have been convicted and sentenced to relatively short sentences.

The sheriff and his/her deputies are also responsible for courtroom security, and for serving criminal warrants and civil summonses, including eviction notices and restraining orders. This office may also be responsible for managing the sale of foreclosed real estate and seized or abandoned property, including vehicles. Depending on the jurisdiction, a sheriff may also be responsible for providing security at public events such as concerts and sporting events.
