What is a Coroner and Medical Examiner?

Coroners and Medical Examiners are medical officers who make official inquiries about the cause and manner of an individual's death, especially those which occur under unnatural or suspicious circumstances. The role of coroner originated in medieval England, where that job title denoted an officer entrusted with the duty of investigating deaths by violence or accident.

Coroners and medical examiners work in morgues to provide information for death reports, medical autopsies, post-mortem examinations, forensic pathology, and toxicology tests. A coroner also works to identify unknown or unclaimed bodies, report news of a death to the next of kin, collect and transfer personal belongings found on a body at the time of the death, as well as sign death certificates.
