Most states do not require the accreditation of Private Schools. Some states give Private Schools the option of either being accredited or receiving some type of approval or license from the state. Charter Schools are privately run but publicly funded. A Charter School has a charter or agreement with the state or sponsoring school board that allows it to operate with some degree of autonomy. Charter Schools are typically run by non-profit organizations or for-profit companies, but they receive taxpayer funding to cover part of their operating expenses.
Most Private Schools are non-profit organizations. This allows Private Schools to accept contributions that can be treated as tax-deductible. However, there are some Private Schools that operate as for-profit businesses. The for-profit structure of a Private School affords owners greater control over the school than would be the case with a non-profit.
