A commissioner is an elected government official who serves on a board of commissioners and manages budgets, supervises the construction of roads and other infrastructure, and enacts ordinances. The commissioner is responsible for enforcing state and federal legal mandates that apply to his or her municipality. Commissioners may also handle the administration of public buildings, as well as the collection of taxes and the maintenance of tax records.
Commissioners provide information about property taxes, real estate and land sale records, and property searches. They also manage local government administration offices. In most communities, they're responsible for local government budgets and may also be involved in election matters.
