The mayor manages local government processes. Depending on the exact local government structure, the duties of the mayor may vary widely. He leads and serves as a member of the city council or town council. In a community with a small city council, the mayor's office may be responsible for most of the administrative decisions.
A mayor is always an elected position, and he has significant local political influence. Assisted by the council, a mayor, and his/her office staff manage a municipality's business operations including infrastructure projects, budget and financial matters and other day-to-day operations. The office also acts as a liaison between that municipality and the state and federal governments.
